House projects have been a HUGE part of our lives since last fall and we are constantly adding new projects and expanding our areas of expertise [or not!] in all things house related. But recently, we re-visited our very first house project together.
When we were just a couple of baby newlyweds [of three months!], we moved into our first home together. A one bedroom, tiniest kitchen you ever saw, apartment. Thanks to the generosity of family and friends, we already had a lot of things that we needed. But ONE thing was missing- a dining table.
We had moved in that morning and went on the search on craigslist for a dining table with chairs that we could afford by that evening [cause we were BROKE]. We searched and searched until we came across a table that expands with four chairs for $40.00!!!! $40.00 for all of it!! Let me tell you- we told EVERYONE who came into our house how much that table cost. We were so proud of the steal we had found.
Only problem? It was a vibrant, glossy orange wood that we didn’t appreciate. But to us- that wasn’t a problem- it was an opportunity! And that table turned out to be the first time that we learned that even house projects are better together.
We sanded the WHOLE thing down, like a ton. Then we re-stained the top and the wooden seats for the chairs and spray painted the rest. We just thought this table was the bees knees. It was a conversation with everyone who came into our home and we proudly showed off our awesome $40 table that we thought was worth much more now.
Well… a couple years down the road, we moved, the chairs moved, the chairs were used for painting chairs, the spray paint yellowed with every passing day. Either they started wearing down or our abilities to re-create house pieces were expanding and the table paled in comparison. Either way, we decided recently to re-sand, paint, and upholster the chairs for a fresh look.
But the best part? We still got this table for $40.00. 😀
